The most important tip one could give, when it comes to sun protection, would be to tell you whether you're young or old, that you should take all necessary precautions to prevent ultraviolet damage to your skin. This includes avoiding the sun, wearing clothes that are protective, and properly using sunscreen.
If you're interested in looking younger than your age, and whatever age you are, then it's something that you'll want to do.
You see, skin damage from sun exposure is a cause of skin aging that you can actually prevent.
It's easy to do, but there are some little known tips that when you follow them, you'll make a big difference to the quality of your skin, which will be noticed by yourself and everyone else around you.
So instead of only using wrinkle creams that give you results, you should at the same time remember to reduce the stress on your skin and prevent free radical damage by the sun with these steps here.
So here are the top anti aging tips when it comes to reducing sun induced skin aging:
Tip 1
Sun protection begins with avoiding the sun during the times when solar radiation is at its peak. That peak time is from 10 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon with noon being the strongest period of all. If at all possible you should avoid prolonged outdoor activity during this time of the day.
Changing our habits relating to our outdoor behavior are much more effective in preventing damage to the skin than wearing sunscreen, and over the long run much cheaper too.
Tip 2
Wearing a hat is one of the most important things you can do to prevent exposure to the sun, and we aren't talking about that ultra fashionable baseball cap. Your hat needs to extend far enough out so as to provide protection to your cheeks, neck, and chin, in other words, full facial protection. A baseball cap can't do that - it protects just the nose and forehead. A hat with a 7 cm wide brim is perfect.
So go ahead and see if you can shop for a panama, akubra, cowboy or other hat which will provide this protection for you.
Tip 3
Clothing is also an excellent method of protecting the skin. Everyday clothing can provide an SPF rating of 6 to 15 depending on the fabric and that will drop below 5 if the fabric becomes wet. There is also special sun protective clothing on the market that can provide an SPF of 30 or even higher. Solarweave and Solumbra are just two of the manufacturers of these specialized clothing items.
So wear long sleeved tops and pants whenever possible to protect your skin from unnecessary sun exposure during the day.
Tip 4
Sunscreen products can also be beneficial, but only if you choose the right product with a high SPF rating and a sunscreen which provides both UVA and UVB protection.
A high SPF sunscreen is more protective, but one of the most common mistakes is applying the sunscreen too thin, which significantly reduces the rating that is on the label. A study has found that we tend to apply sunscreen at less than 25% of the thickness that's recommended. So make sure you apply enough if the sunscreen to get the benefits you expect.
Protecting against both UVA and UVB radiation is important as both of these rays cause burning, premature skin aging as well as a host of other skin problems. So check the label and look for a broad spectrum sunscreen, which have ingredients that will protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
Tip 5
When should you apply and reapply your sunscreen? Studies in the UK have shown that the recommended times to apply sunscreen is 15-30 minutes before exposure to the sun, and then to reapply 15-30 minutes after exposure to the sun, instead of the often quoted 2-3 hours after exposure.
However, you should also reapply immediately after swimming, after using a towel, or if you have perspired excessively.
Out of all these tips, avoiding the sun in the first place, especially in the peak hours, is the most protective thing to do when it comes to preventing premature skin aging. But if you need to go out in the sun, then using all the steps above, including a suitable hat, protective clothing as well as sunscreen would be a good idea.
My personal favorite is to use a wide brimmed hat because it means that you don't have to rely on sunscreen which can be greasy and even irritable to sensitive skin.
So there you go.
Now that you have some guidelines for sun protection, why not turn over a new leaf and do your best to protect your skin, and reduce skin aging, wrinkles and other skin problems.
Remember that a combination of wrinkle creams as well as sun protection will give you impressive results.
Protecting your skin in these sensible ways will ensure that your skin will look years younger than your calendar age, at whatever age you are.
So follow these top tips to take great care of your skin, and enjoy your younger looking skin.
